Mid-Term Grading

The Division of Academic Affairs continues to promote student success that involves the posting of mid-term grades by PBSC’s faculty and instructors. Assigning mid-term grades is certainly not a new idea; faculty and staff have been in agreement for many years that it is an important academic exercise.*

Faculty and instructors will regularly post student’s current mid-term grade for all courses via the Canvas LMS. Canvas also allows each instructor to be in compliance with FERPA** guidelines, as it will minimize third-party app violations as well as, assist in mitigating emergencies, early alerts, grade appeals, assignment transfers and most importantly facilitate communication of academic progress to students.

Faculty and instructors may use the information to determine how they can best provide assistance to students
who need it. Providing our students with that feedback and assistance will help students stay enrolled in class
and, ultimately, improve their success rate. This supports Palm Beach State's Strategic Plan and the enrollment
management plan in raising retention and success rates.

Faculty and instructors play a vital role in making student success at Palm Beach State a reality.

Mid-Term Grading Instructions (Canvas) for Faculty

To create a new column for midterm grades in the Canvas Gradebook follow the Manual Grading & Extra Credit instructions in the Bb-to-Canvas Conversion - Where to Begin course.

Columns in the Gradebook are only created by adding an assignment in Canvas. If you need to create a column in the Gradebook to use for manual grading, you can create a No Submission or On Paper assignment.

NOTE:  If you have not done so already, please enroll yourself into that course by following this link before you follow the direct page link to the gradebook instructions.

Should Faculty need further “how to” assistance on Canvas functions, please contact Canvas Tier 1 Support. It is available 24/7/365 and is accessible via the 'Help' button inside Canvas or call 877-376-9392.
