Being Mindful and Being Well Go Hand-in-Hand
By Bernadette Coleman
The rollout of the Institute’s first new course in a series of three titled “The Science
of Wellness: Wellness of the Mind” could not have been more timely.
In a world riddled with uncertainty, this well organized, interactive course gently
guides the student down a surprising path of self-discovery. Through mindfulness and
compassion practices (and, after experiencing plenty of “aha” moments) the student
feels empowered, to live their best life NOW, and to share that self-love, acceptance,
understanding and compassion with others by way of BEING.
As an early childhood educator, I jumped at the chance to take this course, and it
exceeded my expectations. We have all heard that we need to approach things calmly,
breathe, be in the moment and the like. Wellness of the Mind offers clear definitions
for mindfulness, resilience, self-compassion and more, as well as strategies and techniques
to facilitate their meaningful practice.
I learned and practiced techniques that literally slowed my heartbeat and breathing down and allowed me to feel truly present. I was then able to observe situations more objectively and to proceed purposefully.

As a bonus, there is ample opportunity provided throughout the course to learn and
practice these same techniques at the child’s level. There is such a need in today’s
fast-paced world (and for our future world) for young children to be able to self-soothe,
calm their bodies, engage in positive self-talk, and train attention. Working with
the children on these concrete life skills and sharing their energy for learning has
inspired me to continue to find ways to meet their inner needs.
The teachings and practices from the course, Wellness of the Mind, have been transformative
for me. They have helped me to stay grounded, true to my intentions, helpful and productive
in all areas of my life. This course is a must for teachers and all who are ready
to experience the joy that is present in every moment.
