Steps to Creating Your Resume

Step 5: Work Experience
(Chronological Resume)

Writing Action Statements
You will need to describe your duties, responsibilities and accomplishments in simple, powerful action statements that emphasize your uniqueness and contribution to an employer. Add numbers if you can and try to focus on accomplishments.

DO NOT use the words: Duties, responsibilities, I, we, they, or you.

  1. Show off accomplishments. Don't include a dull description of job duties. Highlight important accomplishments from your work experience. Instead of "assisted customers," you need to go into more detail. See the example below:

Assisted over 50 customers daily to successfully resolve billing problems.

  2. What skills did you use in the past jobs that are most relevant to the job you are pursuing?

Examples: Sales, customer service, office skills, management, organization

  3. For each skill, think of several accomplishments from your past work history that illustrate that skill.

Use the questions on the next screen to help you get started.
