Celebration of the Arts

November 2021

“It’s your heart that makes a difference in the lives of our students.”

President Ava Parker’s words to artist Helen Salzberg are as brilliant as the colorful brush strokes emanating from Helen’s artwork. Palm Beach State’s naming dedication for the Helen M. Salzberg Gallery on October 28 brought a tremendous opportunity to showcase the College, the arts and the power of giving.

The Palm Beach Gardens Eissey Campus is now home to the Helen M. Salzberg Gallery, complementing her scholarship endowment that serves students and elevates the arts program for both College and community. Helen’s opportunity to embark on a lifetime of artistic expression and talent came at a young age. Now, she is providing the same for our students at a time when securing the arts in educational programming is essential.

Surrounded by family, friends and guests of the College, Helen showed everyone what the occasion meant to her. “I should thank all of you for giving me the opportunity to give to these young people. They mean so much for us and the community.” Helen’s gift generously benefits student artists, Palm Beach State’s arts program and local artists with an opportunity to share and advance their work.

Hosted by the Palm Beach State College Foundation, the evening was a milestone in the life of the College, showcasing not only its arts program but also a vision that elevates the profile of Palm Beach State and its impact on the community. While everyone who attended may not have known Helen’s work, they all left as fans of the artist’s signature paintings and collages and outlook on opportunity, a theme that emerged throughout the celebration.

The occasion also featured an exclusive wine tasting with professional golfer David Frost, sharing stories of his family’s winery. “I grew up simple, learned by what I saw and what was around me, developing my own skills and dreaming of something better.”
Dr. Barbara Carey-Shuler shared a thought heard throughout the evening, “Life is about giving. Tonight represents giving to each other and what you Helen have given to the world and now these students.”

Vice President of Advancement and Executive Director of the PBSC Foundation David Rutherford provided well-deserved accolades for Helen and her inspiration. Professor Jacques De Beaufort, who has worked with Helen for years, also shared his appreciation for Helen and the workshops she has conducted for the College and children in the community.

President Ava Parker recognized Helen’s commitment to the College and its mission, “You are ensuring opportunities, scholarships and more for our students. They may come to us with talent and goals, and, because of you, we help them to know their abilities. You are and always will be appreciated more than you’ll know.”

Perhaps Helen’s granddaughter Josephine offered the truest sentiment of the night, directly addressing her grandmother. “It’s not just about your art and the talent that you bring. It’s about the stories your art tells.”

Helen Salzberg’s gift represents an opportunity for Palm Beach State students to tell their story through art, truly making a difference in their lives for years to come.
