College Credit Applied Technology Diploma
What is a medical transcriptionist?
Medical transcriptionists are specialists in medical language and health care documentation. They transcribe voice recordings of detailed medical reports dictated by health care providers as well as edit reports generated by speech recognition technology (SRT) software. The medical transcriptionist is an integral member of the health care documentation team contributing to the creation of each patient’s legal medical record.
This 18-month college credit diploma program prepares the student for employment as a medical transcriptionist, also known as a health care documentation specialist or medical language specialist.
Earn the RMT credential
Program graduates may take the industry-recognized Registered Medical Transcriptionist exam. The RMT credential, offered by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI), is highly respected in the industry and lets employers know you have the necessary skills to be employed as a medical transcriptionist.
What skills does a Medical Transcriptionist need?
While no previous medical background or experience is required, touch-typing at a minimum of 45 words per minute is required to enter the program. To achieve success in the field, students must reach a minimum of 65 words per minute upon program completion.
Other qualities of the successful medical transcriptionist:
- Excellent command of English language (grammar, punctuation)
- Superior computer and keyboarding skills
- Excellent listening skills
- Attention to detail
- Ability to multitask
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to concentrate and think critically
- Keen interest in health care and medicine
Where does a Medical Transcriptionist work?
Medical transcriptionists work for a variety of health care facilities and organizations. Most medical transcriptionists work remotely from home for medical transcription service organizations or acute care facilities. They also may work as independent contractors or as full-time employees earning full-time benefits such as medical coverage, paid time off and 401K programs. A computer and secure Internet connection are required to receive and submit work electronically. This portability makes medical transcription a great profession for military spouses or those who seek a nontraditional work environment.
What is the potential for advancement?
With work experience and upon achieving the Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) advanced credential through AHDI, medical transcriptionists may advance to positions such as a quality assurance editor/specialist or supervisor. They may also transition into medical coding, health informatics and other related roles. Some credits from the Medical Transcription program may be applied toward the Health Information Technology A.S. degree at Palm Beach State College.
