PLACEMENT EXAMS

Who should take it?

If you’re an incoming degree seeking student at Palm Beach State College, you may need to take the PERT. | See exemption list

Non-Palm Beach State students planning to attend another school can take the PERT at a PBSC Test Center. A test fee is required in the Cashiers Office prior to taking the test.

What else do I need to know?

The PERT is comprised of three sections: Reading, Writing Skills (English) and Math. There are 30 questions per placement sub-test. The PERT is an untimed test but each test section should be completed within the same school day.

Students may not retake the PERT on the same day and the testing fee must be paid for each retake.

Students required to take the ESL must take the ESL before taking the PERT a second time.

Students currently enrolled in developmental courses cannot retest in the same subject area until the end of the current term.

Who should take it?

International students whose native language is not English must present evidence of proficiency in speaking, writing and understanding the English language by submitting passing scores on one of the following tests: Accuplacer ESL or TOFEL.

Possibly.  For new PBSC students, the initial exam is included in your Application Fee. Should you need to retake the exam or you're not a new student, the fee would apply.

For students taking the ESL for placement into non-credit LGO English classes, there is a flat fee of $25.

What else do I need to know?

Students currently enrolled and attending a preparatory class cannot retake the Accuplacer ESL until the end of the current class.

Students should check with the Office of Admissions or Academic Advising to determine if this test is needed. After taking the Accuplacer ESL test, students should see an Academic Advisor.

Scores can be used to place students into intermediate algebra, college algebra, pre-calculus, and introductory calculus course.

What else do I need to know?

There are 20 questions on this test. Six content areas are measured:

  1. Algebraic Operations – simplification of rational algebraic expressions, factoring and expanding polynomials, and manipulating roots and exponents.
  2. Solutions of Equations and Inequalities – the solution of linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, systems of equations, and other algebraic equations.
  3. Coordinate Geometry – plan geometry, the coordinate plane, straight lines, conics, sets of points in the plane, and graphs of algebraic functions.
  4. Applications and other Topics – complex numbers, series and sequences, determinants, permutations and combinations, factorials, and word problems.
  5. Functions – polynomial, algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
  6. Trigonometry – trigonometric functions

Who should take it?

The PBSC Testing Center offers the TABE. Prior to testing, students should check with an Advisor, Program Director or attend a Program Information Session for their program of choice to see if they are exempt from taking the TABE.

What else do I need to know?

The allowable time for each TABE 11/12 session is listed below. The entire exam does not have to be taken at one time. You can take one section and then return later to take another section. 

  • Reading - 100 minutes
  • Language - 55 minutes
  • Math - 65 minutes

 

Online TABE practice exams:

  • Photo ID must be shown before testing. Acceptable IDs include:
    • Current driver’s license
    • State approved ID
    • College ID
    • Current passport
  • You must test alone in a quiet room without disruptions.
  • Food and drink are not allowed while testing.
  • Scratch paper is allowed along with a standard pen/pencil.
  • Breaks are not allowed.

Technology Requirements

  • Tests can only be administered on a desktop computer or laptop.
  • The device must have a webcam and microphone (built-in or external)
  • Connection to network with sufficient internet speed: at least 2 Mbps download speed and 2 Mbps upload
  • Operating systems: Windows 7 or newer, Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) or newer
  • Browser with pop-up blocker disabled: Google Chrome v47 or later, Mozilla Firefox v41or later, Internet Explorer v10 or later, Microsoft Edge v12 or later, Apple Safari v6 or later

ACADEMIC EXAMS

Who should take it?

A PBSC student who will miss or has missed a regularly scheduled class test may be permitted to take an Out-of-Class test. The decision to allow the test is left to the instructor. 

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. It is up to the student to make the appropriate arrangements for the test. Please check the Test Center Appointment page for testing availability.

Is there a fee?

Yes. The fee is $5. Students with accommodations are excluded from the fee.

Fee waivers are provided for students who missed a test due to jury duty, military duty, death of an immediate family member, college sponsored activity, hospitalization, illness, or religious, reasons. Documentation is required and must be presented at the Testing Center.

What else do I need to know?

Provide the Testing staff with the professor's last name, the course number, and which test you want to take.

Check with your professor for information about your test, e.g., deadline date, time allowed,  or authorized aids you should bring.

Testing Center staff will adhere strictly to your professor's written instructions and deadline dates. They are not authorized to make any exceptions.

Out-of-Class tests are administered during regular operating hours of the Testing Centers. 

Examinees should insure that there is sufficient time, as indicated by the Professor, to complete their exam prior to Test Center closing. Time waivers will not be granted within 30 minutes of closing time. All students will be required to relinquish their exams 15 minutes prior to the time the Testing Center is scheduled to close.

Test Center personnel cannot transfer classroom materials, homework assignments, projects, etc., from the students to professor and vice versa.

Student responsibilities for testing at Palm Beach State College

Currently, Proctored Exams are not being proctored in the Testing Centers.

Who should take it?

Another institution may utilize the Test Centers at Palm Beach State College for test proctoring services, at the discretion of the Test Center Manager. Check each campus for availability and required guidelines for proctoring services. 

Is there a fee?

$40 per test. Fee is to be paid via Workday or at the campus cashier's office, by the student or institution.

What else do I need to know?

Please note: The test centers cannot submit course assignments between students and their professor. We offer test proctoring services, only.

Testing instructions should include:

  • Start and end date for test taking.
  • Resources, to be used (calculator, notes, etc, if any.)
  • Time limit for test.
  • A form to be completed and signed by the test proctor should accompany the test.
  • Return, stamped envelope: to return completed exam to college, university or institution.

Student must have full allotted time for testing prior to closing. For example: If a test is two hours long as indicated by the Professor, then the student must be seated two hours prior to closing. No waivers of time are permitted

To arrange proctoring services a student, college, university or institution should contact a PBSC test center to request the test proctor's name and contact information and days available for proctoring services.

A prospective PBSC Distance Learning student needing to take the PERT College Placement Test from another location needs to contact a Palm Beach State College Test Center for information. 

Student should arrive at the test center with appropriate photo ID:

  • Drivers license with Photo
  • State, County, or municipality issued ID with Photo
  • Federal government issued ID with Photo including current Military ID
  • Current Alien Registration Card (Green Card) with Photo
  • Current Passport with a recent Photo


A Palm Beach State Student ID number is required for Correspondence Testing:

  • You may obtain a PBSC Student ID number by completing a no-charge continuing education application.

Who should take it?

Prior to the award of an Associate in Arts (A.A.) or baccalaureate degree any student entering a Florida College System institution in the 2018-19 school year, and thereafter must demonstrate competency in civic literacy prior to graduation. In Fall of 2022, and thereafter, student receiving an Associate in Science (A.S.)/ Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) must also demonstrate civic literacy competency.

Yes. Students should speak with an academic advisor before contacting the testing center to schedule an appointment. 

Is there a fee?

For PBSC students, the first exam is free. Should you need to retake the FCLE exam, a $10 fee would apply.  For non PBSC students, a fee of $10 will apply and thereafter. View testing fees.

What else do I need to know?

Students who need to demonstrate competency in civic literacy must complete one of the following Civic Literacy Requirement.

1. Students who pass the FCLE in HS will still be required to pass an approved course once they enter the Florida College System.

2. Students entering the Florida college system Fall 2018 through Summer 2021 seeking an Associate in Arts (A.A.) or baccalaureate degree:

a. Are not required to take the FCLE.
b. Must complete one of the following:

  • complete an approved course
  • complete an approved assessment

3. Students entering the Florida college system Fall 2021 or beyond seeking an Associate in Arts (A.A.) or baccalaureate degree:

a. Are required to take the FCLE if they are currently enrolled in or have passed a required course.

b. Must complete both of the following:

  • complete an approved course
  • complete an approved assessment

4. Students entering the Florida college system Fall 2022 or beyond seeking an Associate in Science (A.S.)/ Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.):

a. Are required to take the FCLE if they are currently enrolled in or have passed a required course.

b. Must complete both of the following:

  • complete an approved course
  • complete an approved assessment

Approved Courses:

  • AMH 2020 and achieved a passing grade
  • POS 1041 and achieved a passing grade

Approved Assessments

  • AP Government and Politics: United States and achieved a score of 3 or higher
  • AP United State History and achieved a score of 4 of higher
  • CLEP: American Government and achieved a 50 of higher
  • FCLE and achieved a 60% or higher 

About the test

The FCLE assesses students' civic literacy competency. It includes 80 multiple-choice questions and four domains with 20 questions in each section (American Democracy, United States Constitution, Founding Documents, and Landmark Impact on Law and Society).

The passing score for the FCLE is 60%; Candidates can attempt an unlimited number of exams. Students cannot retest on the same day of taking this exam. The first test is free for PBSC students. Non-PBSC students and retakers must pay $10 to take this exam.

You should allow enough time to complete your test, per the instructor's stated test time, before the Test Center closes for the day. For example: If the instructor has allotted two hours for a test, the student should be seated in the Test Center by 5 p.m. if closing time is 7 p.m.

NURSING EXAMS

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, Please check the Test Center Appointment page for testing availability.

Is there a fee?

There is a $30 proctoring fee which can be paid prior to testing and an additional exam fee that will be paid on the Evolve website on the day you take your exam. Please contact the Testing Center where you plan to take the HESI exam if you have any additional questions.

What else do I need to know?

The HESI A2 test may be taken every 61 days but not more than 3 times per calendar year. 

PBSC administers the entire exam (9 sections) or the math section only.

HESI A2 Student Instructions

1. All Students Must Create a Student Evolve Account before arriving at the Testing Center:

  • Test applicants are required to set up an Evolve account with the vendor, Elsevier.
  • You should only create one Student Evolve account through Elsevier. If your information changes, just update your account. (You will need an active PBSC student email account to register.) 
  • After registering, an email with your user name and password will be sent to your student email account.
  • This email will need to be printed and brought with you at the time of your test appointment.
  • Students without an active Student Evolve Account will not be eligible to test.

How to Register for an Evolve Account

You must have an Evolve account with Elsevier, the exam sponsor, in order to register and pay for the HESI A2.

  1. Go to the Evolve home page
  2. Select I'm a student
  3. Select Register for Distance Testing under HESI Secured Exams
  4. Select Register for this now on the HESI registration page to put HESI registration in your cart
  5. Select Redeem/Checkout
  6. Enter your name, email address and an account password to create your Evolve account

 Who should take it?

The Palm Beach State College Nursing Department determines if these tests are needed and permission from the Nursing Department is required prior to testing.

NLN ACE I - Foundations of Nursing: This is a pre-admission exam for students who are licensed as LPNs or Paramedics. If qualified, a student can advance into the RN program by skipping one semester.

NLN ACE II - Nursing Care of Childbearing Family
This is a pre-admission exam for individuals who are current or past RN students.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. These exams are administered at the Lake Worth Campus only. Permission from the Nursing Department, is required prior to testing. Once approval is obtained, follow the information at the link below to select a date/time and pay for the exam(s).

NLN ACE I - Foundations of Nursing  

This is a pre-admission exam for students who are licensed as LPNs or Paramedics. If qualified, a student can advance into the RN program by skipping one semester.

The NLN ACE exam covers the Fundamentals of Nursing, which is the focus of PBSC’s Semester One of nursing. The exam is timed for 3 ½ hours and there are approximately 185 questions. A transition student will need a score of 75% or higher to advance place into Semester Two of the RN program.

NLN ACE II - Nursing Care of Childbearing Family  

This is a pre-admission exam for individuals who are current or past RN students. These students must have successfully passed Semester Three but were not successful in Semester Four of nursing. The student MUST pass both the NLN ACE I and the NLN ACE II exams in order to return to Semester Four. By passing both exams the student can skip Semesters One, Two and Three.

The NLN ACE II exam covers Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Care of Child which is the focus of PBSC’s Semester Three of nursing. This exam is only for nursing students who have failed the Semester Four of the RN program. This exam is timed for approximately 1 ½ hours and there are approximately 100 questions. A student will need a score of 75% or higher to advance place into Semester Four of the RN program.

If the student is unsuccessful with NLN ACE I and or NLN ACE II, the student will have to start from the beginning with Semester One of the RN program.

The TEAS test is no longer administered for entrance into any Palm Beach State College program. If you are taking the TEAS for another institution, it is only administered on the Boca Raton and Lake Worth campuses.

Yes, $70 payable to ATI via credit/debit card and a $30 proctoring fee payable to Palm Beach State College.

Directions For Testing
The TEAS cannot be administered without the following information:

  • You MUST have a Palm Beach State College Student ID number.
  • Examinees need to set up an account with ATI, the testing vendor, at atitesting.com
  • You are required to bring your username and password to the test center. Without it, you will not be able to test.

  • TEAS is 3.5 hours
  • Four sections: Reading, Math, English, Science
  • Total of 170 questions
  • No calculator permitted for the Math section; only scratch paper

PUBLIC SAFETY EXAMS

Who should take it?

Palm Beach State College offers the CJBAT test for Law Enforcement and Corrections.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, all appointments are made through the Pearson Vue websiteAll CJBAT exams should be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.

Is there a fee?

Yes, $39 payable via credit or debit card when you register on the Pearson Vue website.

What else do I need to know?

ID Requirements

You are required to present 2 forms of original (no photo copies), valid (unexpired) IDs.

  • A primary ID (US government issued or an International Passport with name, photo and signature)
  • A secondary ID with name and signature or name and recent recognizable photo. 

Important: When registering on the Pearson Vue website, you must enter your legal name exactly as it appears on the identification you will present at the Test Center. If there is not an exact match, you will not be able to take your test and you will not be reimbursed for any fees paid.

Test Information

There are separate tests for corrections and law enforcement. Make sure you select the correct exam. 

The exam consists of 3 separately-timed sections:

  • Section I - behavioral attributes;
  • Section II - memorization;
  • Section III – written comprehension, written expression, deductive reasoning, and inductive reasoning.

In total, there are 97 questions on the CJBAT. You will have 1 ½ hours (90 minutes) to complete the exam.

You can retake an exam only 3 times per 12 month period.

The exam  is only administered within the state of Florida.

Score Results

The BAT result is Pass or Fail and is valid for 4 years from the date the test is taken. No percentage scores are given. The only official grade report for the BAT is the exam result listed in ATMS (FDLE's Automated Training Management System). All Florida criminal justice agencies have access to ATMS.

Accommodations

Accommodated testing must be preapproved by Pearson Vue. Request accommodations. Each request for test accommodations is considered on a case-by-case basis. Accommodations cannot be added to a previously scheduled exam. If approved for accommodations, you will be provided instructions on how to schedule your accommodated exam.

Who should take it?

The NFSI test is required for entry into the following PBSC programs:

EMT

  • ALL applicants are required to take the NFSI within one year of the application deadline date and score at least a 75% in order to be considered for selection.
  • Candidates must wait a period of 30 days before retaking the NFSI exam.

Paramedic

  • ALL applicants are required to take the NFSI within one year of the application deadline date and score at least a 75% in order to be considered for selection.
  • Candidates must be a certified Florida EMT or eligible for the Florida EMT exam.
  • Candidates must wait a period of 30 days before retaking the NFSI exam.

Firefighter

  • ALL candidates are required to take the NFSI within two (2) years of the application deadline
  • A passing score is at least a 75%
  • Candidates must wait a period of 30 days before retaking the NFSI exam.

Who should take it?

 

Palm Beach State College, in collaboration with National Testing Network (NTN), is now offering computer-based employment testing for entry-level firefighters, law enforcement officers, correction officers, and emergency communications applicants applying for city, county, and state public safety agencies. 

Do I need an appointment? 

To schedule and pay for your exam(s), go to the NTN website

Is there a fee?

Yes, the fee is paid when you schedule you exam on the NTN website.

What else do I need to know?

NTN’s testing delivers examinations with video simulations that depict scenarios candidates would actually encounter while working in the position they are applying for. After viewing the scenarios, applicants are asked how they would respond in a particular situation. Candidates can see their score after completing the test, and public safety departments receive instantaneous score results once exams are completed.

PRIOR LEARNING EXAMS

Who should take it?

 CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the United States. It's available at the Belle Glade, Boca Raton, Lake Worth, and Palm Beach Gardens campuses.

Do I need an appointment?

Students must register at CLEP Registration Website and pay $93.00 by credit/debit card for each CLEP exam. For directions on how to register on the CLEP website, view the CLEP Exam Registration Tutorial.

Appointments for testing on campus can be made via the Test Center Appointment page. Candidates must bring their CLEP Test Voucher and PBSC receipt to the Testing Center on the day of testing.

Seating is limited on all campuses. For scheduling information refer to the individual Campus Testing Schedules. Some campuses allow walk-in testing. Other campuses are by appointment only.

Is there a fee?

CLEP exams are available to candidates at all Palm Beach State Test Center locations.

CLEP charges $93 for each CLEP exam taken.

Palm Beach State students are required to see an Academic Advisor to determine if a CLEP exam is accepted for their area of study. Students are responsible for selecting the correct CLEP exam.Palm Beach State College DOES NOT administer the College Composition MODULAR exam.

CLEP ID REQUIREMENTS  

  • ID option for Home-schoolers: If you do not have the required government issued ID, please complete a Student ID Form, which is valid for one year. The form must be accompanied by a recognizable photo, with a school or notary seal overlapping the photo. The form must be signed in front of a school official or notary. If you fail to present the appropriate ID, you will not be tested.

Funding for CLEP Exams is extended to eligible military veterans. You can receive full reimbursement for a CLEP exam and administration fees from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Who should take it?

Any PBSC student hoping to earn college credit by taking an exam rather than the course, by first checking with an Academic Advisor. Over 2,000 colleges and universities recognize the DSST program and award college credit for passing scores. The DSST exam is available on all five campuses, Boca Raton, Belle Glade, Lake Worth, Loxahatchee, and Palm Beach Gardens.

Do I need an appointment?

Testing candidates must register on the DSST Website.

Appointments for testing on campus can be made via the Testing Center Appointment page. 

Is there a fee?

DSST exams are available to candidates at all Palm Beach State College Testing Center locations.

DSST charges $100.00 for each DSST exam taken.

There is a $15.00 (per test) proctoring fee payable to Palm Beach State College. Payment Instructions.

What else do I need to know?

Palm Beach State students are required to see an Academic Advisor to determine if the DSST exam is accepted for their area of study. Students are responsible for selecting the correct DSST exam.
If you are not a PBSC student and you do not have a Palm Beach State College Student ID number, you can use a valid phone to be logged into PBSC’s portal. To register for a DSST appointment go to Schedule a Test Appointment.

Retake Policy:

Testing candidates can retake the same test after 90 days (about 3 months). Taking it beforehand will result in an invalid exam and forfeit testing fees.

DSST ID Requirements:

The DSST ID requirement can be either of the following government issued IDs:

  • State ID
  • Driver’s License
  • Passport
  • Military ID

Who should take it?

Students who need to provide documentation of their competency in a foreign language may satisfy their foreign language requirement by successfully passing a Brigham Young University (BYU) Foreign Language Achievement Testing Service (FLATS) exam.

The BYU - FLATS exams are open to the public, but you must obtain a PBSC ID number.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, Appointments are required. Please check the Test Center Appointment page for testing availability. Student must also register for the FLATS exam on the BYU-FLATS website. Proctor information can be obtained by contacting the testing center.

Is there a fee?

BYU charges $50 for an online exam and $75 for a paper/pencil exam. The BYU charges are payable online via a debit or credit card. 

Students will be assessed a $15 proctoring fee payable to Palm Beach State College.

What else do I need to know?

The exams are currently administered at the Loxahatchee Groves, Lake Worth, Boca Raton, and Palm Beach Gardens Campuses.

The results are reported as pass/fail.

The exams can fulfill the foreign language competency requirement at PBSC; but no college credits are awarded at PBSC. The exams cover the equivalent of the first three semesters of a given language. Most exams are computer based and are a maximum 2½ hours in length. Ten exams are administered with paper and pencil.

Who should take it?

Certain courses within the curriculum offered at Palm Beach State College are eligible for earned credit or clock hours through a challenge examination. If the student achieves a passing score on the examination, credit or clock hours will be awarded to the student's transcript.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Challenge Exams are administered on a walk-in basis at the Lake Worth campus only. The exams are administered Monday through Thursday between the hours of 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. 

Is there a fee?

Yes, $50.

What else do I need to know?

If the student achieves a passing score on the examination, credit or hours will be awarded to the student's transcript.

Exams are not immediately scored. Results should be available within 24 hours.

 

PEARSON VUE CERTIFICATION EXAMS

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, appointments are made through Pearson Vue.

Is there a fee?

Yes, the fee is payable to Pearson Vue when you schedule your appointment.

What else do I need to know?

Under the provisions of Florida Statute 943.1397 individuals have three attempts in a 12 month period to pass the SOCE.

Please certify that you have met the following requirements:

  • Met the Minimum Qualifications established in Florida Statutes 943.13
  • Passed the Basic Abilities Test (BAT)
  • Completed the Basic Recruit or Cross Over Training program at a Commission-certified training school
  • Paid the SOCE fee of by registering online at Pearson Vue using a debit or credit card

Who should take it?

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians determines which candidates are authorized to take the NREMT exam and sends that information to Pearson VUE for each authorized candidate. The records specify which exam a candidate has been authorized to take and the time period during which he or she can take the exam; a candidate cannot register/schedule with Pearson Vue unless he or she has authorization from NREMT.

Who should take it?

Do I need an appointment?

At the Lake Worth campus, the ASE exam is available on a walk-in basis on the following days and times:

  • Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Friday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The ASE exam is available at the Boca Raton campus via an appointment. To view available testing schedules and register for an ASE appointment,  Schedule a Test Appointment. You will use the generated PBSC Student ID number and the password you create to log into the Appointment Scheduler.

There are 3 types of appointments:

  • ASE - 1 hour appointment - for candidates taking an exam with a time limit of 1 hour or less
  • ASE - 2 hour appointment - for candidates taking an exam with a time limit greater than 1 hour
  • ASE - Advanced Exams - for candidates taking the L1, L2, L3, L1R or L2R exams

When scheduling a test appointment, enter your ASE ID/Eligibility code and Test Code in the field provided. One test per appointment time slot.  Example: ASE-2345-7891  A6

Is there a fee?

Yes. Please register and pay for the ASE exam on the ASE website or by phone with Prometric at 1-877-346-9327. You will receive an 11 digit ASE ID/Eligibility code.

When you arrive at the PBSC Testing Center on the day of the test, you will be required to provide your ASE ID/Eligibility code and one form of non-expired, government-issued, photo- and signature-bearing primary ID - such as a driver's license, military ID card, state ID card, passport, etc.

PBSC PantherCards are not an acceptable form of ID.

Exception: School IDs from a high school or trade school without a signature are acceptable forms of ID, but the ID must bear a photo.

Who should take it?

Castle provides certification and licensures examinations in fields such as Engineering, Finance, Medical Technology, and Physical Fitness.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. Visit the Castle website to schedule your test appointment. 

Locate the exam you wish to take and then follow the prompts to register and schedule. Or, call 919-572-6880, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Once approved, contact Prov toll free at 866-720-7768 to schedule a testing appointment. Prov scheduling staff is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. through 6 p.m.

Candidates should be prepared to provide scheduling staff with their name, Candidate ID, and their ZIP code.

All tests are open book and are timed. When you apply for your test, you will be provided detailed information about each test you are required to take for licensure. The information will describe the content of the test as well as provide information regarding study materials.

Retest Policy
Failed examinations can be retaken according to local licensing jurisdiction rules. Candidates cannot retake an exam once they have passed that exam unless required by their jurisdiction. Before rescheduling another exam attempt, candidates must be reapproved by the licensing jurisdiction.

Cancel/Reschedule Policy
If candidates need to change or cancel their testing appointment, they must contact Prov at least five business days prior to their scheduled date. Changes will be made at no cost if candidates notify Prov by the deadline. If candidates fail to appear for their test or fail to cancel or reschedule their testing session by the close of business five days prior to their scheduled test date, they will forfeit their exam fees and should contact their licensing board for further instructions.
