Lack of Experience

No Paid Work Experience

"I don't have much experience on my resume, but I know I could do the job."

Suggestions:

  1. Use a functional format and emphasize your abilities, knowledge, and coursework. Show how skills in past jobs do transfer to the position you are seeking.

  2. Get some minimal experience even if it is unpaid. In some fields you can volunteer or complete an internship. You can also count self employment and special projects.

  3. If you have related work experience, but it is not recent, rearrange your work history by category such as Related Experience and Other Experience.

  4. No paid work experience? Emphasize school activities, extracurricular activities, volunteer activities, personality qualities that would make you a good worker, achievements and accomplishments.

  5. Talk to people working in the field. They may offer suggestions about how you can gain valuable work experience.
