In the academic year of 2013-14, Palm Beach State College’s athletic department initiated the Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT). Since that time, this group has either organized, directed and/or participated in over 25 community service projects, 1500 community service hours and raised approximately $3,000 for the needy of Palm Beach County.
In 2014, this group produced the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year in the State of Florida, Samantha Evans, who is now attending Liberty University. In 2015, another SALT member, Miah Shephard, was named the Women’s Basketball State Scholar Athlete of the Year. This group has also produced 7 National Junior College Athletic Association Academic Award Winners.
This select group of student athletes, who were handpicked by their coaches because of their positive volition and trend toward leading, have participated in monthly leadership workshops through a developed vision, mission and curriculum created by the athletic department.
Workshop topics have included: Intrapersonal Leadership, Dealing with Adversity, Decision Making and how that affects Your Sphere of Influence, Team work, Effective Communication, Unity, Commitment and Servant Leadership.
We feel we have addressed the age old debate: if SALT is or is not good for you? From our perspective, we can say SALT is Good for You!
SALT VISION (What we want to do):
Provide our student athletes with foundational leadership life skills to enhance their capacity to not only lead themselves but transcend those skills to others in their sphere of influence.
SALT MISSION (How we are going to get there):
The Athletic Department will offer monthly leadership workshops during the course of the academic year to a select group of athletes in the hopes they will transcend learned skills to their teammates.
